What do you see when you look at yourself in the mirror—a picture or a selfie? How do you feel about the person staring back at you?
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not always kind to myself when looking at a selfie before choosing to post it. But then again, who is?
We live in a society that normalizes being our own worst critics and constantly comparing ourselves to others. It’s a losing battle, unfair to ourselves, and wreaks havoc on the rest of our lives. After all, our self-image is integral to how we show up, who we become, and the outcomes we experience.
As a celebrity and personal fitness trainer, wellness consultant, and keynote speaker, I’ve seen firsthand how our self-image impacts everything from our careers to our relationships.
Our mental image of ourselves goes beyond looks. These internal narratives and labels provide a blueprint that dictates our actions, confidence, and success.
The Science of Self-Image
In the ’60s, Plastic Surgeon Dr. Maxwell Maltz discovered that many people still struggled with confidence even after major physical transformations. Why? Because their inner self-image hadn’t changed.
‘Self-image’ is created over time through childhood experiences, external feedback, and personal successes or failures. Charles Cooley’s concept of the “looking-glass self” suggests that much of our self-image is shaped by how we believe others perceive us.
The brain reinforces self-image through neural pathways. We strengthen these pathways when we repeatedly have certain thoughts or engage in specific behaviors, making beliefs more ingrained. For example, each time I add weight to my lift, I strengthen the idea that I am strong. @Disney and @Pixar show a great example in “Inside Out.”
Our subconscious mind works tirelessly to align our actions with our self-perception. It takes information from these neural pathways and uses it to guide us towards or away from success, depending on how we see ourselves, which is probably why so many studies have found such a strong link between self-image and performance.
The good news? We can rewire these pathways through neuroplasticity.
The Ripple Effect of a Positive Self-Image
A strong self-image doesn’t just make you feel good—it transforms every aspect of your life:
- Career: You’ll tackle challenges with confidence and inspire others.
- Relationships: You’ll set healthier boundaries and foster deeper connections.
- Health: You’ll prioritize self-care and make better lifestyle choices.
- Resilience: You’ll bounce back from setbacks faster and stronger.
